Details

Ben and Samantha intend to be in Mozambique for the long term, and they know that in order to be effective members of their team they need to invest lots of time in learning the Yawo language as well as Portuguese, the national language of Mozambique.  They will also need to gain an understanding of Yawo culture.
During 2012, as they prepare to head out to Mozambique early in 2013, Ben and Samantha intend to get a head start on learning Portuguese.

Language software ($400) will be a huge help, as will a good quality pocket HD camera ($300).  Having a camera will enable Ben and Samantha to listen to each other and their language helper as they practice the new sounds and words that their mouths will need to get used to, and watch how their mouths form the words.  In addition to this, Ben & Samantha intend to undertake weekly language lessons with a tutor (approx $1,000).

This project covers these language study costs while Ben and Samantha are in Australia, to give them a great head start for when they get to Mozambique.
