Ken and Roz intend to be in the Silk Road area for the long haul, and much of their first term there will be spent coming up to speed in the language and beginning to understand the culture.

They will need to immerse themselves in their new community and undertake formal language training, which costs around $1,700 per year per person.

Just as important as learning language is gaining an understanding of the culture of the people. Books, tapes, pens and other resources to help in learning will cost around an extra $500.
