Details

The Lani people of the North Baliem are at high risk of contracting HIV/AIDS, and they face a number of social problems, such as many young people running away from home to live on the streets. There is also a high incidence of multiple marriages, broken families and a breakdown of discipline within the family. It is believed that the problem will soon spread to Tiom and Magi.

The staff of a local organisation with whom Rod has been working when conducting HIV/AIDS seminars and workshops, believe the next step in combating HIV/AIDS is to strengthen families.

The organisation aims to hold up to seven seminars, each of which would run for 2-3 days, in different locations in the North Baliem area. It is planned that fifteen to twenty young married couples would attend each seminar. The seminars would cover such topics as sexuality, child discipline and training, and in this way assist in combating the problems of HIV/AIDS, promiscuity, street kids and so on in their groups.

The cost, including transport, provision of materials, food and other expenses is approximately $1,000 per seminar.
