There is no Medicare in Mozambique, so keeping healthy and getting medical help when it is needed can be expensive.  Jonno and Heather and their family need to make sure they visit the doctor regularly for general checkups and keep up their immunisations, to protect them from the various bugs and germs to which they are regularly exposed.  The family also needs regular checkups at the dentist.

While regular, preventative healthcare needs can mostly be met locally, it is not so simple when there is an acute problem!  Samuel will need his wisdom teeth out during 2012.  This will require Samuel and either Jonno or Heather to go to South Africa for the surgery, costing around $3,000.  Caleb smashed his front teeth out a few years ago requires significant ongoing dental work as a result of this.  During 2012 he will need to go to South Africa for surgery as well, with one of his parent.  This will cost around $2,000.

If a medical emergency arises, emergency evacuation insurance is in place for all the families serving in Mozambique.  This emergency evacuation insurance has literally been a life-saver in the past, and gives Jonno and Heather the assurance that, should a life-threatening event occur, they can be evacuated quickly to a place where quality medical treatment is available.
