Language and cultural understanding are at the heart of relationships, and the basis for any ministry activities. Cam and Kath know that in order to be effective members of their team, they need to invest lots of time in learning the Yawo language as well as Portuguese, the national language of Mozambique.  They also need to gain an understanding of Yawo culture.

It is likely that most of their first year in Mozambique will be spent learning Portuguese, as knowing this language this is necessary for survival!  They will each spend one-on-one time with a language nurturer, spending about 2-3 hours per day, 5 days per week with this person.  About a year later, it is anticipated that Cam and Kath will then commence learning Ciyawo as well.  Along the way, they will be making monthly cultural observations, watching, listening, questioning and practising.

Your support of this project will help cover the cost of their language nurturer’s wages, as well as any language books Cam and Kath need to buy, an MP3 recorder, photocopying costs, language workshops and costs associated with exams.  It’s well worth the investment!
