For Steve & Glenda, language and culture learning is almost a full-time job during their first year of service, after which there will be an examination.  It will continue to be a high priority after this first year as well.

Steve and Glenda have been through the process of language and culture learning before, but it was a number of years ago!  Now that they are starting again, they really appreciate the help of their language assistants.  Glenda’ s language assistant, Veronica, comes to the house every weekday morning for two hours. Each weekday morning Steve goes out to the village where his language assistant, Wilson, lives.  In addition, Steve & Glenda practise constantly.

The language of ciYawo is a Bantu language but it is very different from ciLamba , which both Steve and Glenda learned in Zambia, or ciChewa, which Steve learnt in Malawi before.  It does, however, share a structure with these languages.

This project covers the cost of Steve & Glenda's language and culture learning.  Supporting this project is a great investment in their long-term future with their Yawo neighbours.
