Details
Shalom Bible College began in 1999 under the auspices of the Lower Assam Baptist Union (LABU). It began with about 10 students, all pursuing Bachelor of Theology degrees. The college is presently located at Tukrajhar, Assam – the headquarters of the Goalpara Boro Baptist Association (one of the four Baptist unions which make up LABU).
Since 1999 the student numbers at the college have varied, until this year when the application committee had to stop processing applications because there was no accommodation for any more students at Tukrajhar. This year there are 48 students, with the larger number due to the college's decision to offer a Certificate level course as well as the Bachelor of Theology.
The students are Boros, Garos and Rabhas, and there are also students from Nepal and Bhutan. There are six lecturers, two of whom come from Nagaland.
The college board wants to proceed towards accreditation with the Asia Theological Association, however one of the major issues preventing such accreditation is the lack of library books. Presently there are just 876 books in the library – hardly sufficient for 48 students. To have any chance of being accredited, the library would need to have around 10,000 books. The challenge to acquire these books is huge.
Fortunately the books are available relatively cheaply in India. So to provide funds to the college is the best way Australian Baptists can help Shalom achieve its goal.
The funding from this project will go a long way to providing the necessary books, and the Baptist churches in Assam will also assist.
