“Give a man a fish and you feed him for a day. Teach a man to fish and you feed him for a lifetime.”
Our team in South Asia want to add an extra dimension to this saying: “Enable a man to produce fish and his family will be educated and contribute to their community.”
The team is continuing to build on the wonderful work developed in the past to provide villagers with the skills they need to use their village ponds, and even part of their rice paddies, to grow fish. They also learn about preparing fish food themselves as well as how to grow household vegetables, and are introduced to varieties of vegetables with which they can generate a cash crop. All these measures increase family nutrition and income.
Expenses in this program include:
• Solar panels x 1 and associated electrical connections: $1,050
• Wages for Trainers (2) and Staff (2): $10,200
• Training sessions 3-4 times per month for:
o Fish culture: $4,048
o Kitchen gardens: $1,855
o Vegetable raising: $1,688
o Small enterprise development: $845
o Dry season grain production: $2,020
o Fish cooperatives: $696
o Awareness raising: $3,310
