Details
The Joyramkura Christian Project is located in a remote area of central northern Bangladesh, and provides an integrated development project, including health through clinical and surgical services at the hospital, as well as extension services in the villages of the surrounding district.
The hospital has trained nurses for many years, however until a few years ago the training was only recognised in other Christian hospitals, so the nurses were limited in their employment opportunities outside this hospital. Three years ago, however, the hospital secured government registration to train its nurses. This means their training is now recognised by the government and they are employable in any government hospital. This broad employability is of great value to the students and their families.
There are currently 96 student nurses in the hospital (this is a considerable increase from 48 a year or two ago!), studying and working full time. Fees are charged to them for their accommodation, lecture costs and other study related expenses, however in order to keep the study affordable to the students and their families, they do not pay the full value of the costs. Instead, the fees they pay meet about half the training costs and the hospital covers the remaining half. The hospital has limited resources, but sees the training program for its nurses as a worthwhile investment.
We would like to assist the hospital to meet the second half of the cost of training the nurses, which their fees do not cover. At approximately $350 per student per year, it is not a lot of money, but a great investment in the students' futures and the hospital's ability to continue with its training program.
