Details
Alan has joined the team in Mozambique for 2 years, and hopes to serve the Yawo people during that time using his practical skills, and build relationships with new friends. To be able to do this, an understanding of the culture and proficiency in the language is essential.
Although fluency is not possible in two years, Alan is committed to achieving the highest possible level of language acquisition. During 2011 he spent 2-3 hours each weekday morning with a language helper, learning Portuguese which is the national language of Mozambique and essential for being able to complete various day to day tasks. He also took advantage of every opportunity to practise saying sounds and words, and listening to others.
A Portuguese test early in 2012 will hopefully see him then commence learning Ciyawo, which is the local language. Alan will continue formal language lessons for 10-15 hours per week for the rest of his 2 years in Mozambique. He will also take part in a cultural inquiry program which requires him to write a monthly report about observing and inquiring into the Yawo culture. Alan loves learning about the culture of his new neighbours and friends.
